  4.     The nationwide municipal elections were not about road
  5. improvements and garbage collection -- or so said Israeli Prime
  6. Minister Yitzhak Shamir. "Every vote for the Likud," he proclaimed
  7. at an election rally, "means that Israel wants no business with the
  8. murderers of our sons." When the votes were tallied last week, his
  9. right-wing Likud bloc had carried 44 of the 99 municipalities, up
  10. from 26 in 1983. Elated, Shamir claimed an ideological victory for
  11. his policies opposing both territorial compromise and talks with
  12. the Palestine Liberation Organization.

  14.     The stunning upset ended decades of Labor Party dominance in
  15. numerous key regions. With more Labor strongholds expected to fall
  16. in runoff elections scheduled for next week, Labor leader Shimon
  17. Peres grudgingly agreed to an investigation into the humiliating
  18. defeat.

  20.     In Jerusalem legendary Mayor Teddy Kollek, 77, won a sixth term
  21. in office with 59% of the vote. But his Labor-affiliated party,
  22. One Jerusalem, lost its majority on the powerful city council, in
  23. part because of low Arab turnout.
